Fabric Painting Workshop (FPW-05)

Class limited to 6, Ages: 12 - 100
Join central New Hampshire artisan, Susan Wei, in this exciting workshop that combines a number of skills to create unique textile art. During the first session, students will learn to paint fabric in several different modes. The second session will include decorating the painted fabrics with stamps and foam plates, and discharging the fabric. All materials are included.

Quilt a Pillow Cover in a Day (QPC-07)

for Children ages 9 - 14

Class limited to 5, Ages: 9 - 14
We will be quilting a pillow cover using a variety of fabrics while learning to piece using some traditional patterns: log cabin, split rail fence, star blocks, four patch, etc. Fabrics and pillows will be provided however participants may bring their own choice of cotton fabrics. Some cutting and machine sewing will be included in the class. Bring a lunch!

Kiln Fired Glass (KFG-07)

Two 3-hour workshops

Class minimum: 4; maximum: 8, Ages 15 and up
This fast paced class will give you a chance to explore kiln fired glass and many of the techniques that make melting glass so exciting. Create several kiln fired pendants and one pair of earrings, working with clear and black dichroic glass. In the first class, we will be fusing the glass into one large block and then cutting and shaping the glass in the second class. The glass will then be re-fired a second time to fire polish and melt the glass into the finished pendant. Get ready to work hard and have fun! Glass technology, safety, cutting glass, equipment, resources and creative directions will be covered. You will complete 8 dichroic pendants and one pair of sterling and glass earrings. Provided materials include firing glass, use of cold working equipment, Bullseye COE 90 glass, fine silver, 2 sterling silver chains or silk cords. Detailed information and a resource packet will be provided. Optional materials to bring: Beads, charms or your own work to share with the class. Due to firing and annealing times, your finished pieces will be sent to you, or they may be picked up.

Kiln-Fired Glass Suncatchers (KFGS-07)

Melting glass, also known as the ancient art of kiln forming, is fun and addictive! Cut brilliant colored pieces of sparkling glass and combine them with stringers, noodles, confetti and millefiori. Your creation will be fired in a kiln, melting all the pieces together into a beautiful suncatcher. Simple wire working will be covered to hang your piece. Glass technology, safety, cutting, equipment, resources and creative directions will be covered. Due to firing and annealing times, your finished pieces will be sent to you.

Zentangle 101 (Z-07)

Make beautiful images with repetitive patterns. Learn this technique in one evening and enjoy the calming benefits every time you create one of these 3.5” square artistic gems. Prerequisites: None - Non-artists encouraged. Tuition includes a $6 supply kit. This class is offered on May 26, June 23, July 28, and August 25.

Contemporary Landscape Painting in Pastel

This fun and exciting workshop will explore various ways to correspond the subject of landscape with contemporary artistic concerns. Concepts of color, design, and techniques will be presented and demonstrated. Critique, at-easel assistance, and lots of painting time will make this an educational and enjoyable painting experience. All levels are welcome from beginner through advanced. Robert K. Carsten is a signature member of the Pastel Society of America, the Connecticut Pastel Society, and an honorary lifetime member of the Southwest Florida Pastel Society. He serves on the Board of the Pastel Society of America. A regular contributing writer for The Pastel Journal and the Artist’s Magazine, he is also a popular workshop instructor and has won many awards including First Prize/ Pastel in the 2008 Prismacolor For Art’s Sake competition; Juror’s Choice Award at the 2009 national juried exhibition of the Southern Vermont Arts Center, and many more. Millefiore Glass Pendants (MGP-08)

Class minimum: 4; maximum: 8, Ages 15 and up
Have you ever wondered how the beautiful millefiore pendants from Italy are made? In this 3-hour glass fusing workshop, you will learn how to make your own pendants and earrings. By placing the tiny millefiore pieces in ceramic molds, you will be able to create several different pieces including hearts, ovals and circles. Glass technology, equipment, resources and beginning wire working will be covered. While the glass fires in the kiln, learn how to make sterling silver ear wires. Due to firing and annealing times, pick up will be after the class, or your pieces can be mailed. We will be using Italian COE 104 glass. Materials supplied will include millefiori glass, glass firing, two sterling silver necklace chains or silk cords.

Topics include tools, supplies and materials, resources, learning to see, drawing with lines, basic perspective, creating values, suggesting light and shadow, cross-hatching, and shading. Subjects will include animals, landscapes, textures and more. Numerous handouts and a resource list will be provided.

Monday Evening Watercolor (MEW-09)

These watercolor sessions for advanced beginner and intermediate painters will focus on applying various types of washes, brush work, developing values, portraying light and shadow, use of additives and color mixing. Thursday Morning Watercolor (TMW-09)

These sessions are intended for beginner and advanced beginner watercolor painters and are offered on a come-as-you-can basis. Classes include exercises in applying washes, brush work, developing values, use of additives and color mixing. Subject matter will vary. Pre-registration is encouraged, because space is limited to 10 students. Materials and equipment are available for $5 per class, or students may bring their own.

Painting the Late Summer Landscape in Watercolor (PLSL-09)

NOTE: This workshop will be held at Church of the Holy Spirit Community Life Center, 263 Highland St. in Plymouth. There is lots of class space and plenty of free parking! Nationally recognized Vermont watercolorist, and master landscape painter, Robert J. O’Brien (www.robertjobrien.com) will lead this all day watercolor workshop. Rob is a member of the American Watercolor Society and the National Watercolor Society. Rob will do a demonstration in the morning, and participants will paint a late summer or early fall landscape in the afternoon. The workshop will end with a short critique session. Bring your own photo, or choose one of Rob’s. Painters of all levels are welcome, and no experience is necessary. Register early – Rob’s workshops always fill up quickly. Bring a lunch.

Watercolor for the First Time (WFT-10)

In this workshop, Cheryl Johnson, member of the Vermont Watercolor Society and NH Art Association, will explain and demonstrate the basics of watercolor painting. The morning session will cover tools and materials, color mixing, values, basic washes, brushwork, and techniques. During the afternoon session, participants will complete a simple landscape. The workshop will end with a short critique session. No drawing or painting experience is necessary. All materials and equipment will be supplied. Bring a lunch.

Handbuilding Pottery I (HP-10)

Oct. 5-25, Joyce Bouley
Tuesdays, 6:00-8:00 p.m., Four 2-hour classes
Members: $130; Non-members: $145
Class limited to 4, Ages: teens and adults
Come and create some special gifts for the up coming holidays. Joyce will guide you through your creations: a bowl, mug, tray, pitcher, or a piece you have in mind, something special for those special ones. Each student can complete 3 different projects. Class includes all supplies, tools to use at class, and firing of your work. Class will be held at Joyce’s studio, which is 7 miles from downtown Plymouth.

Art Parties AT ARTISTIC ROOTS

Celebrate your child’s birthday with an art workshop designed from his/her wishes, ideas and themes. One-and-a-half hour party workshops are available on weekends year round. The cost is $150 for up to 10 children. This covers the materials and the instructor, who will work with you to personalize the experience to the greatest extent possible. Registration/Refund Policy

You may reserve a place in class by phone (603-536-2750) or email classes@artisticroots.com. However, to be officially enrolled in an Artistic Roots class, the tuition must be paid in full.  Registrations are accepted in the order in which full payment is received. Classes are subject to cancellation if minimum enrollment is not met two weeks before start of the class, in which case, registrants will be notified, and a refund will be issued.

If Artistic Roots has to cancel a scheduled class, then the full amount of tuition will be refunded. If an enrolled student cancels his/her registration the following policy is in effect: If a student cancels 14 days prior to a class, a refund will be issued for the full amount of the tuition. If a student cancels later than 14 days and more than 7 days prior to the first meeting of a class, 50% of the tuition will be refunded. If a student cancels less then 7 days prior to a class, the full tuition will be forfeited.

Please consult the parking map for suggested parking possibilities.

Metered parking with a 2-hour limit is available around the Town Common on Main Street. A limited amount of free parking is available near the Court House on Green Street, located along the river just behind Main St. There is also a pay-to-park lot a short walk away, located near the intersection of Holderness Road and Green St., that offers metered 24 hour parking.
